Mike Cara Earns Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant Certification

I’m pleased to announce that I have successfully completed the certification requirements to become a Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant.

For me, professional education has always been about more than adding another credential. It is about ensuring that homeowners who come to me for mortgage advice receive knowledgeable, informed guidance—particularly when they are making significant financial decisions about the equity they have built in their homes.

With over 30 years of experience in finance, I have seen the mortgage industry change considerably. Mortgage products evolve, lending guidelines change, and the financial needs of Canadian homeowners change along with them. Continuing education is an important part of remaining an effective mortgage broker in Peterborough and serving homeowners throughout Central Ontario.

Why Reverse Mortgage Expertise Matters

For many Canadians aged 55 and older, their home represents one of their largest financial assets. They may have spent decades paying down their mortgage and building substantial home equity, while having considerably less money available in retirement income or liquid investments.

A reverse mortgage may provide eligible homeowners with an opportunity to access some of that home equity without having to sell their home or make regular mortgage payments.

Homeowners may consider accessing equity for many different reasons, including:

  • Supplementing retirement income
  • Paying off an existing mortgage or other debts
  • Completing renovations or accessibility improvements
  • Managing unexpected expenses
  • Helping children or grandchildren financially
  • Increasing available cash flow during retirement
  • Remaining in their home longer

However, simply being eligible for a reverse mortgage does not necessarily mean it is the right financial solution.

That distinction is important.

A Reverse Mortgage Should Be Evaluated Carefully

A reverse mortgage is a specialized mortgage product with characteristics distinct from those of a conventional mortgage, home equity line of credit, or traditional refinance.

Homeowners should understand how the mortgage works, how interest accumulates, what costs may be involved, and how accessing home equity today could affect the amount of equity remaining in the future.

There may also be alternatives worth considering.

Depending on a homeowner’s income, credit, existing mortgage, property value, and long-term objectives, another mortgage or home equity strategy may be more appropriate.

My role as a mortgage broker is not simply to recommend a particular product. It is to help homeowners understand the available options so they can make an informed decision based on their individual circumstances.

What Does Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant Mean?

Completing the Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant certification provides additional specialized education on reverse mortgages and the needs of Canadian homeowners considering them.

That knowledge complements my broader experience as a licensed Ontario mortgage broker and more than three decades working in finance.

When someone is considering using the equity in a home they may have owned for 20, 30 or even 40 years, I believe they deserve more than a quick mortgage quote.

They deserve a conversation.

What are they trying to accomplish? How much equity do they need to access? What other options are available? What are the advantages and potential disadvantages? And, most importantly, does the proposed solution make sense for their longer-term financial plans?

Those are the questions that should come before choosing a mortgage product.

Reverse Mortgage Advice in Peterborough & Central Ontario

As a Peterborough mortgage broker, I regularly work with homeowners whose financial circumstances do not necessarily fit neatly into traditional bank lending guidelines.

Retirement can create similar challenges.

A homeowner may have substantial equity and an excellent history of managing their finances, but their income after retirement may make qualifying for conventional financing more difficult than it was during their working years.

That does not automatically mean a reverse mortgage is the answer.

It does mean that understanding the full range of mortgage options becomes increasingly important.

My Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant certification adds another level of specialized knowledge to the experience I already bring to these conversations.

Over 30 Years of Experience Is Just the Beginning

I have spent more than 30 years working in finance, but experience should never be an excuse to stop learning.

The mortgage industry continues to evolve, and so do the needs of Canadian homeowners.

In addition to being a Licensed Ontario Mortgage Broker, I am an Equifax® Certified Credit Professional and now a Certified Canadian Reverse Mortgage Consultant. I continue to pursue professional education because better knowledge allows me to have better conversations with my clients.

Whether someone is purchasing their first home, refinancing, dealing with credit challenges, planning for retirement or considering accessing the equity accumulated in their home, the objective remains the same:

Help the homeowner understand their options and make an informed decision about their mortgage.

Considering a Reverse Mortgage?

If you are 55 or older and considering a reverse mortgage in Peterborough, the Kawarthas, or Central Ontario, I would be happy to discuss how reverse mortgages work and help you determine whether one is worth including in your financial strategy.

A reverse mortgage can be an excellent solution for the right homeowner—but the first step should always be understanding your options.
